Euthanasia Reference Manual for NJ
Euthanasia technicians should welcome this debate—as a profession, we should be clear, transparent, and honest about our decisions and agree that euthanasia should ultimately be reserved only for animals that are suffering or are too aggressive to safely place in homes.
Regardless, we must ensure that when euthanasia is performed it is as humane as possible. Direct injection of sodium pentobarbital (referred to as euthanasia by injection, or EBI) remains the most humane method available. We are encouraged to report that more organizations than ever before have adopted EBI, as opposed to using far less appropriate alternatives like gas chambers. It is our hope that by the time the next edition of this manual is published we will have reached the point where every shelter practices only the most humane methods of euthanasia available. NJ Administrative Code for Animal Facility Operation: Title 8 Chapter 23a (see link below)
Kennels, pet shops, animal shelters and pounds must be inspected at least annually by the local health department and found in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and ordinances before municipalities can license their operation. The regulations for the sanitary operation of kennels, pet shops, animal shelters and pounds address specific requirements that must be met in order for a satisfactory rating to be issued for the facility.
